ET-205 Redlining and White Flight: Law and the Political Economy of Belonging

Why do neighborhoods look the way they do? In this course, we'll consider neighborhood construction through redlining and white flight, the role of the suburbs in economic and environmental degradation, the creation of the urban highway system, and destruction of the American streetcar system. We will also explore how the law has been used for change and what the landscape of modern neighborhood equity social movements looks like. With a focus on areas like Flint, MI, Worcester and Lowell, MA, Baltimore, MD, and San Francisco, CA, we'll consider the roles of zoning laws, land use laws, and political history.

This course explores Afrofuturism as a cultural, artistic, and philosophical movement, examining how Black creators across literature, film, music, and visual art use speculative imagination to reclaim history, reimagine the present, and envision liberated futures.
